However, despite this the Macedonian people have always retained their own identity. Much of contemporary Macedonia came about after a devastating earthquake in 1963, after which aid poured in from the rest of former Yugoslavia to create the modern urban landscape you see today. Macedonia has three national parks - Pelister, Galicica and Mavrovo. Lake Ohrid, in the south western corner of the country, is a natural tectonic lake which is the deepest lake in Europe and one of the world"s oldest. The lake is beautiful, with striking vistas of the water from the beach and hills.
