Information about MACEDONIA Macedonia is an unbelievably green and beautiful country. Despite continuing uncertainties and upheaval, its people are extremely hospitable and welcoming. At one time or another, the country has been taken over by almost every super power in Europe, all of whom have left behind a richness of cultural heritage. However, despite this the Macedonian people have always retained their own identity. Much of contemporary Macedonia came about after a devastating earthquake in 1963, after which aid poured in from the rest of Yugoslavia to create the modern urban landscape you see today. Macedonia has three national parks - Pelister, Galicica and Mavrovo. Lake Ohrid, in the south western corner of the country, is a natural tectonic lake which is the deepest lake in Europe and one of the world's oldest. The lake is beautiful, with striking vistas of the water from the beach and hills.
